Southwest Airlines is hoping to add nonstop flights from Oakland to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

OAKLAND (KRON) — Southwest Airlines is hoping to add nonstop flights from Oakland to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

Officials with the airline announced Wednesday that they are making efforts to add flights from Oakland to areas in Mexico that are not otherwise directly served by Bay Area airports.

The officials have filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to make nonstop flights to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

If the federal agency gives its approval, service to these beach resort areas in Mexico could begin in February 2017.

“Los Cabos, in particular, is the most requested international destination from the East Bay that does not have a nonstop option and Puerto Vallarta is also very popular with Bay Area travelers,” Bryant Francis, Port of Oakland’s director of aviation, said in a statement.

Francis added that Oakland International Airport is the state’s fastest growing airport under certain measures in large part because of investments by Southwest Airlines over the past two years.

As recently as last month, the airline added new daily service to Long Beach, Reno-Tahoe and St. Louis at the airport, adding more than 1,000 daily outbound seats.
