While there are many modern style, new construction homes available in Puerto Vallarta – SOHO PV, Pier 57 and URBAN II being three of the most popular on the current real estate market – many second homeowners in Puerto Vallarta are drawn to a traditional Mexican design style. One of the hallmarks of this design type is tile flooring and if you are looking for a Mexican style home or thinking of renovating your home, here are the 4 main types of Mexican tiles with which you will become familiar.

Terracotta

Warm and cozy, terracotta tiles are a popular choice for many homeowners because they are durable and easy to clean. They come in a variety of earthy tones and can be glazed or given a high gloss finish for different looks.

Saltillo Tiles

As authentically Mexican as it gets, these Old Mexico, rough-edged terracotta tiles are named for the city of Saltillo, Coahuila, where they are traditionally made by hand. Saltillo tiles come in shades of yellow, red, and orange and are long-lasting and extremely easy to care for.

Talavera Tiles

Originating from Puebla, these painted Mexican tiles are famous for adding a “wow factor” splash of color and pattern to any home. They are glazed so stains don’t penetrate them, making them perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, and left-over tiles make perfect coasters for the patio.

Mexican High Relief Tiles

Similar to talavera tiles, these tiles are hand-painted with designs that are undercut into the tile, making the colors and patterns particularly vibrant. Because they are so striking, many homeowners choose to use these as accent tiles.

No matter which tile you choose, tile floors offer a reasonably priced, easy care, durable flooring option which helps to keep your house cool, are environmentally friendly and great for those with allergies as they do not trap dust nor dander.
