Getting your Mexican driver's license in Puerto Vallarta or Rivera Nayarit is a relatively straightforward process, but – like many things in Mexico – it does require a few steps. While you can drive using a valid American or Canadian drivers license as tourist or short-term visitor, if you have purchased a home or condo in Banderas Bay, getting a Mexican driving license should be on your to-do list.

The first step to obtaining your driver's license in Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding areas in Nayarit, is to gather all your necessary documentation. This typically includes your passport, a valid tourist visa or residency card, your proof of address (usually a utility, like the electric or water bill), and a medical certificate. The medical certificate will be issued after your eyesight and blood type are tested.

After you have gathered your documents, it’s time to head over to UNIRSE office in Fluvial, Puerto Vallarta, or the local “Transito” office in Riviera Nayarit to begin the application process. At the office, you will need to fill out an application form, submit all your documentation, and pay the required fee. The fee can vary depending on your residency status and the type of license you are applying for, but at time of publication, it is approximately 600 to 1000 pesos.

Once your application is submitted and processed, you will need to take a written exam to test your knowledge of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. The exam is available in both English and Spanish.

After passing the written exam, then comes a practical driving test to demonstrate your ability to operate a vehicle safely. The driving test typically includes various things such as parallel parking, three-point turns, and driving in different traffic conditions.

Once you have successfully completed the written and practical exams, you will be issued a temporary driver's license until your permanent license is ready for pickup. The entire process typically takes a few weeks to complete, so it's important to plan ahead if you need your driver's license by a specific date.

Overall, the process of getting your driver's license in Mexico may seem daunting at first, but with the proper documentation and preparation, it can be a relatively smooth and efficient process.
