Welcome to Tropicasa Realty's newest series – Mexico Homeowner Tips – where we'll be sharing advice and resources to help you settle into your new Puerto Vallarta property with confidence.
Adding
greenery to the patio of your Puerto Vallarta condo or to the terrace of your
home in Riviera Nayarit is a great way to create a personal oasis of your own.
Our tropical, coastal climate means that you'll want to select plants that
tolerate heat, humidity, occasional salt spray, and that will thrive in
container pots. Here are a few options to consider for your outdoor space.
Flowering shrubs and vines
Bougainvillea, hibiscus, mandevilla, plumbago, lantana and pentas are all
sun-loving and attractive choices.
Fragrant and tropical accents
Jasmine, frangipani/plumeria, orchids and bromeliads are all well-suited to the
tropical Puerto Vallarta climate.
Foliage and palms
Areca palm, pygmy date palm, philodendron, monstera, pothos and croton all provide
lush foliage and color.
Garden plants
Dwarf citrus, chili peppers, cherry tomatoes and herbs like basil, oregano and
lemongrass all grow well in our climate and can be a tasty addition to your
patio greenery.
Helpful tips

· Place sun-lovers on the sunniest side and shade plants in areas with less direct sun
· Windproof heavy pots or anchor tall plants; install trellises for vines
· Mulch, regular fertilization, and consistent watering all keep plants healthy
· Favor native or well-adapted species from local nurseries to save water and reduce pests
And our number one tip for a successful terrace garden? Seek out and heed the advice of local green thumbs from your neighborhood vivero (garden centre), who will have expert suggestions for every level and type of gardener.
