Puerto Vallarta’s December Processionals

Once again, the beauty of the holiday season in Puerto Vallarta is about to begin, as December welcomes all the magic, colors, culture and flavors of Christmas in Mexico.

An important and perhaps the largest part of Christmas holidays in Puerto Vallarta are the annual processionals in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe. A greatly revered figure in the Mexican Catholic church, it is told that the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe miraculously appeared on December 12th in 1531 on the cloak of Juan Diego to restore his faith.

Paying homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe, each day starting December 1st to December 12th, pilgrimages are made through the streets of downtown Puerto Vallarta to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Each day, different groups will make their processional – often school groups, civil associations, unions or coworkers – starting late in the afternoon along Calle Juarez. The street will also be lined with food vendors, as will Plaza de Armas located across the street from the Malecon, which will have a street party with music and food stands on each of the 12 nights.

While this is one of the most special Christmas traditions in Puerto Vallarta and wonderful to watch, traffic and parking can be challenging on these first 12 days of December due to road closures, so consider taking public transportation, taking advantage of Ubers advance booking feature to reduce waiting time, or walking and leaving your car at your Puerto Vallarta condo or home.

We’ll be dedicating our December Tropicasa blogs to highlighting the culture of the Christmas season in Puerto Vallarta, as well as providing some important information and details that will make celebrating and navigating seasonal traditions easy and worry-free.
