Living in a tropical climate comes with an endless list of perks, but occasionally there are tiny pests buzzing around that try to interrupt the serenity of oceanside living. Mosquitoes are a common culprit for bug bites in and around Puerto Vallarta, especially in the warmer, more humid months of the summer season. These tiny terrorists should be handled with caution as they can carry the Dengue and the Zika viruses. To ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones as you enjoy the summer weather, here are a few tricks and tips to keep mosquitoes off your property and off you!

The easiest start to protecting your Puerto Vallarta home is with screen doors and windows, which are a great way to keep mosquitoes out without obstructing your ocean, city or jungle views. Also important is to ensure the area surrounding your home is free of standing water – like in drains or empty garden pots – as that can be a common breeding ground for mosquitoes. You can also add some ambiance and comfort to your patio or terrace with citronella candles or torches that add a lovely glow to the night as they keep away pests.

There are also many natural options to choose if you would like to avoid chemical repellents when outside. Many essential oils like lavender and tea tree oil have been proven to fight mosquitoes off and have a nice scent. Be sure to wear your choice of repellant in the early morning hours and at dusk, as the mosquitoes are the most active during those times of the day.

Don’t let mosquitoes ruin your summer fun! Tell those pesky creatures to “buzz off” by using some of our tricks and tips to protect you and your home.
